Do You Have a Budget You Work To?

My company year is 31st January.  I went into my new financial year on 1st Feb with my budget already in place.  I am not sure enough small to medium sized companies have financial budgets in place.  Granted budgeting might not be seen as the exciting job and business owners focus on getting clients, delivering great product/services and generally keeping everything moving forwards. But under that approach money comes in, money comes out and you are sometimes left guessing if there is anything left over.

But as your business grows, not having a budget can quietly become one of your biggest risks.

A budget isn’t a restriction it’s a strategy

Many people associate budgets with limitation. In reality, a budget is about choice and control.

A well-thought-out budget tells you what your business actually costs to run, it gives you minimum revenue targets to break even and to then turn a profit and shows you where your money is going and if it works for you.

Without a budget, decisions are often reactive. With a budget, they’re intentional.

A Budget leads to better decision-making. Eg; should you hire?,  invest in new software?,  increase your marketing spend?

A budget gives you a framework to evaluate these decisions. It removes emotion from the equation and replaces it with data.

Budgeting also leads to sustainable growth.  Growth without a budget can actually hurt a business. More clients could mean higher costs, more pressure on cash flow and increased reliance on credit. A budget helps ensure your growth is profitable, not just busy.

Final thought

If you don’t tell your money where to go, it will decide for you.  A budget isn’t about restriction it is about control
