If you had told me a year ago that I’d stand in front of a room full of people trying to make them laugh on purpose, I probably would’ve laughed at you. But here I am fresh from entering a Humorous Speech Contest at Chester Speaking Club.
Let me tell you: standing up to deliver a prepared speech is one thing. But trying to be funny? On cue? That’s a whole new level of scary. I didn’t win the contest but that felt irrelevant as I walked away with something far more valuable, increased confidence, clarity, and the joy of seeing other people laugh.
I joined Toastmasters, more specifically Chester Speaking club originally to become a better communicator for work. As a business owner and podcaster, I wanted to sharpen how I spoke with clients, presented ideas, and handled tough conversations.
What I didn’t expect was how much fun it would be.
Toastmasters isn’t just about eliminating “ums” and “ahs.” It’s about crafting your message, telling a story, reading the room and confidence in your message.
Whether you’re leading a team, selling an idea, or just introducing yourself at a networking event, how you communicate matters.
Thanks to Chester Speaking Club and yes, that slightly nerve-wracking speech contest I’m more equipped than ever to connect with people in a way that’s clear, confident, and maybe even a little bit funny.
