1000 Days of Welsh: What Language Learning Taught Me About Business
A few days ago, I hit a milestone, 1000 consecutive days of learning Welsh on Duolingo. I’m not fluent yet, but I can hold a conversation, understand local tv and radio, I think I just need more speaking practice to get up to conversation speed.
What strikes me is how closely the lessons from language learning mirror the realities of running a business.
Consistency Beats Intensity
When I started, I didn’t commit to “mastering Welsh in a year.” I simply committed to showing up every day. Some days I did 20 minutes, others just 1 short exercise taking a couple of minutes. But the streak grew and so did my skills.
In business, the same applies. It’s not the occasional big push that builds success; it’s the small, consistent actions that compound over time: following up with clients, refining processes, developing your team. Learning a language doesn’t come with dramatic breakthroughs. One day you suddenly realise you understood a sentence on the radio not because of a big leap, but because of those tiny steps before it.
Business growth is similar. Rarely does one big decision transform everything overnight. Instead, it’s about gradual improvements, tightening margins, improving customer experience, investing in systems that, over time, create a big impact.
If there’s one thing my Welsh journey has taught me, it’s this: show up, improve a little each day, and trust the compound effect. Whether it’s learning a language or growing a business, progress is less about dramatic breakthroughs and more about the power of consistency.
